AZ Alkmaar’s Europa League playoff against Atromitos had to be abandoned in the 57th minute when a fire broke out inside the stadium. Atromitos were up 1-0, but losing 3-2 on aggregate when spectators were evacuated from AFAS Stadion.
The fire broke out on the top floor of the stadium, with dark smoke wafting over the roof. According to De Telegraaf, the stadium lights were affected, but there were reported injuries. Rumors that this was an attempt to burn down the stadium because Jozy Altidore is no longer with the club seem to be completely made up by me right now.
The remainder of the Atromitos match will be played Friday morning before the Europa League group stage draw takes place.
