Many folks figured Ryne Sandberg, the legendary Chicago Cubs second baseman, would manage at Wrigley Discipline sooner or later. Just not within the customer’s dugout.
But on Friday, because the Philadelphia Phillies come to Wrigley for a weekend series, that is just where Sandberg will likely be. He is the interim supervisor of the Phillies, hired two weeks in the past to the day to replace Charlie Manuel. Sandberg’s 8-6 up to now on the Philly helm.
This might be one of those Brett Favre-playing-towards-the-Packers moments where a man so identifiable with a franchise for so a few years now finds himself throughout the field. In Sandberg’s case, he hasn’t performed actually in a Cubs uniform since 1997. But he suited up for 16 seasons with the Cubs, turning into a Hall of Famer and a fan favourite.
He then came back as a coach and was pegged by many as an inheritor to the managerial throne someday. That day did not come. Two opening came and were stuffed. As an alternative Sandberg went to Philly, the place he thought he had a greater shot of not being neglected.
About his return to Wrigley, the person Chicago followers know as Ryno informed the Philly Inquirer:
“The very first thing is, I will in all probability try my flag on the market on the correct-discipline pole. I’m certain all of the reminiscences of all the games will come and I’ll mirror on that. Then I am going to put myself in that spot over there in the visitors’ dugout, and once the sport starts will probably be enterprise. I will be ok with it.”
In Wrigleyville, sentiments are split. These two pics snapped by Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune present a close-by bar and an ATM inside Wrigley. One is comfortable to have Ryno back. The other desires to cowl him up.
Surely there might be others in the Cubsophere this weekend sad to see Sandberg in a Phillies uniform. However earlier than they think about booing or heckling — they wouldn’t, would they? — they should do not forget that it was the Cubs that spurned Sandberg first.
