The UFC pulled a bit of a surprise on Wednesday when it announced that former champions B.J. Penn and Frankie Edgar had been chosen to coach on Season 19 of its reality series, ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’ that can begin airing in January. Ariel Helwani broke the news Wednesday during “UFC Tonight.”
Penn and Edgar will then combat in April at a venue and date to be introduced. They’ve already met twice, both times in 2010, with Edgar defeating Penn to win the light-weight title at UFC a hundred and ten in Abu Dhabi, and then retaining it in a rematch at UFC 118 in Boston.
“B.J. Penn is transferring all the way down to one hundred forty five pounds to teach The Ultimate Fighter against Frankie Edgar,” UFC President Dana White mentioned in a press release. “B.J. actually hates the truth that he misplaced to Frankie Edgar. It’s something that’s been burning deep inside him for three years now. So he’s shifting right down to a hundred forty five pounds to not only avenge these defeats, however to try to become the primary fighter in UFC historical past to win titles in three completely different weight classes.”

Penn has held the light-weight and welterweight belts within the UFC, but has struggled lately. He’s 0-2-1 in his final three and was badly crushed in his last two outings, by Nick Diaz and Rory MacDonald in fights at welterweight.
Early in his career, Penn infuriated White by talking of leaping up to a number of courses to combat for titles. Penn has already fought at heavyweight, and as soon as he meets Edgar in the coaches’ fight after the season ends, he’ll have fought at featherweight, light-weight and welterweight in the UFC.
Edgar defeated Charles Oliveira at UFC 162 to snap a 3-fight shedding streak, all of which came in title fights. He lost back-to-again bouts to Benson Henderson in light-weight title bouts and then dropped to featherweight, the place he was crushed by Jose Aldo.
Edgar is sixteen-4-1, together with a ten-four-1 mark within the UFC.
Filming will begin someday in mid-October.
